Salon owner: 'I don't deal with drugs'
RACINE - Ruth Healy said she does not allow drug dealing at her Racine businesses.
But Healy has been charged in federal court along with 17 others for her reported role in alleged drug trafficking and distribution at one of her businesses, Ruth's Beauty Salon, 1200 S. Memorial Drive.
The charges were announced Tuesday and that same day Healy told The Journal Times they are unfounded.
"I am not guilty of anything," said Healy, 76, who has been a Racine business owner since 1977. "I don't deal with drugs and I don't like people that deal drugs and I don't like people that do drugs. Anyone in Racine can tell you that that knows me."
Healy was arrested Thursday around 6 a.m. in a raid at her home in Racine, she said.
"They hit the door with the big bar and they came in and busted the door," she said. "We was in bed and they got us out of bed. I went to court in my pajamas."
Healy appeared in a Milwaukee federal court Thursday and was released later that day, she said. She is charged with knowingly and intentionally making the business at 1200 S. Memorial Drive available for storing, using and distributing drugs. If convicted she faces up to 20 years imprisonment, a $500,000 fine and three years of supervised release, according to the federal indictment against her.
Healy operates four businesses out of the building at 1200 S. Memorial Drive including a limo service but the salon was the only one mentioned by authorities Tuesday.
Drug dealing "was not happening in the building," Healy said. "I'm innocent to whatever was going on.
