Kenwood celebrates 4th of July with patriotic and community spirit

Kenwood Plaza Park, usually tranquil under a broad, shady canopy of oak trees, was alive with excitement on the 4th of July, with all kinds of people running around at daybreak, literally. The 40thAnnual Kenwood Footrace kicked off at 7:30 am with 1,300 racers pounding the pavement. Sponsors set up tents in the park, while across the street the Kenwood Community church organized a well-attended silent auction featuring artwork by local artists and many coveted items provided by local businesses, such as Figone’s olive oil and passes to Morton’s Warm Springs .

After working up an appetite running or shopping people headed to the back yard of the church, a popular spot for summer weddings, for the pancake breakfast. By 9 am there was a line snaking across the street and into the park, waiting for a generous plate of fluffy scrambled eggs, feather light pancakes and maple syrup, sausage, a juicy slice of orange and orange juice. Seating was plentiful with long tables set up in the back yard and a large room inside. It was a good deal for $7, and only $2 for runners.

By 10 am the crowd moved to Warm Springs Road, lining the street in anticipation of the main event, the Kenwood Hometown Parade , returning after a one year hiatus to the delight of the community. Lt. Col. (Ret) Chuck Thelan, the Grand Marshal, was honored by the Kenwood Parade Committee for his service to our country as a pilot in the Air Force for 22 years. Shot down over Germany in World War II he spent more than two years as a POW.

The Kenwood Fire Department led the parade, and for 40 minutes the crowd was entertained by a collection of creative floats, goats, chickens, horses, dogs, kids, and classic cars, culminating with the King and Queen of Kenwood, looking regal. Some of the imaginative floats included a bedspread made entirely of carnations from Birmingham B&B , a truck papered in clippings from the Kenwood Press , with avid readers of the newspaper sitting in the back of the truck, and a troupe from Vita Bella who repeatedly assembled and disassembled a room as they moved down the street, demonstrating that they could decorate a room in no time at all.

After the parade, as the summer sun warmed up, the silent auction wrapped up with some lucky winners clutching their goods, while others disappointedly watched as they were outbid. In the park the Valley of the Moon Alliance , a watchdog organization that promotes the preservation, protection and maintenance of the agricultural character and natural resources of Sonoma Valley, provided a free barbeque, enticing revelers with the aroma of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs.

Scrambled Eggs: Pantry Staple | Premeditated Leftovers

My kids and I love breakfast for dinner. When my husband has to travel, I always make scrambled eggs the first evening he is gone. The kids and I feel like wild rule breakers eating breakfast for dinner. When he is deployed, I make scrambled eggs once a week for dinner – we never get tired of it, though we are happy to exchange our ritual for my husband’s company when he returns.

I also make scrambled eggs when I am feeling under the weather, because it is fast and easy and goes well with orange juice. Plus I don’t feel so bad about eating dinner in my pajamas if I am eating breakfast food.

Scrambled eggs also happen to be frugal and are a fall back meal when the pantry is low. Even though I buy local, free-range eggs for $2.50 a dozen, each egg costs only about 21 cents.

I usually start by frying bacon or sausage. If you are looking for a great low cost, nitrate-free sausage recipe, try this Breakfast Turkey Sausage recipe , which tastes even better for dinner. Then I scrounge through the fridge for add-ins. Below is my basic recipe, but I adapt it to what ever I have on hand.

No matter what you add to your scrambled eggs here are some tips to keep in mind:

For fluffy eggs, beat the eggs really well with a whisk.

Cook over a medium-low heat. High heat creates watery eggs.

Do not over stir or you will end up with small, grainy curds.

Ingredients:

8 – 10 eggs dash or two of pepper

Directions:

If I have just cooked bacon or sausage, I remove it and pour off the grease, but I do not wash the pan. That greasy pan will really add to the flavor of the eggs . If you are not cooking meat add a splash of olive oil or a tablespoon of butter to a frying pan and coat the pan. Heat the pan over a medium-low heat.

In a large bowl, beat the eggs until they are a pale yellow color . Stir in milk, onion, meat, cheese, and spices.

Pour the egg mixture into the greased frying pan and cook over a medium-low heat without stirring until the eggs start to set on the bottom and around the edges of the pan.

We do eggs for dinner too, but usually omelets. A boyfriend (before I was married!) was a short order cook and taught me how to make omelets that turn out perfect every time.

Penzey's Spices make different sausage blends, including breakfast sausage and Italian sausage blends. I use them whenever we want sausage or I need it for a recipe. I like it because I can adjust the amount I add when needed (and it taste really good too!).
