Two Students Die in Gorge, Unrelated Incidents
In a statement released Sunday, Cornell University says Nathaniel Rand, an upcoming senior, drowned while swimming in a prohibited area at the base of Ithaca falls on Saturday afternoon.
Rand was a Human Ecology major.
New York State Dive Team recovered Rand's body late Saturday evening.
Earlier in the day Saturday around 1 P.M., the body of another Cornell student was recovered at Fall Creek Gorge. The University has not released his name until family is notified but says he was a visiting student from abroad.
The University says the student lost his footing and fell while walking off-trail along the gorge, just east of the Cornell Hydroelectric Plant.
Cornell says its campus police, with the support of the Ithaca Police Department, will step up patrols around the falls and gorges to enforce safety regulations.
The University says it will commemorate the two students in the days to come.

For hikers along the Bartram Trail, a bridge crosses the Dick’s creek. Move past this intersection and descend to the Chattooga River Wild and Scenic National Recreation Area. This recognition was given to the Chattooga River that paved the preservation of its habitat. Limited access was implemented to the river after this to maintain the natural beauty of this great outdoor paradise.
After the intersection the path offers you a magnificent 180-degree view of the area as you move down to the Chattooga River. Stay a while at the river and bask in the splendor that the scenery brings. After this, find your way back towards two trails at the left of the main footpath. The two trails are the access paths of the waterfalls yet it can become hard to pass due to some plants, shrubs, and low-level growing trees clustered on the forest floor and the mountain’s wall.
Just be cautious in taking both routes as you pass by these tolerable obstacles. The trail that goes back to the starting point of Dicks Creek Falls is the first trail which is wide and full. The cascading water can be surprisingly deafening. On the other hand, if you want to access the top of the falls, take the second trail which is narrower. This route offers you how the water gushes out from the creek above. Nevertheless, the first trail or the lower one still provides a more marvelous view.
