Salud! Pair grenache and Lady Gaga to create a wine-centered playlist

To improve the taste of cabernet sauvignon, crank up the hard rock.

That’s the recommendation of California winemaker Clark Smith, who told the San Francisco Chronicle a few years ago that it’s “not possible to record a generic ‘music to drink wine by’ CD.”

“A song that might make pinot noir taste great can make cabernet sauvignon taste awful,” wrote W. Blake Gray in the Chronicle story. “You have to pay attention to individual music and wine pairings.”

Intrigued, my wine group decided to test this theory. From Mozart to Taylor Swift, Billy Bragg and Wilco to the Brooklyn-based indie-folk band Pearl and the Beard, we created a long, eclectic playlist to go with nearly a dozen wines.

It’s not a completely out-there idea — studies have suggested that surrounding elements, from price to mood to company, can affect how wine tastes. We tasted the wines outside, sprawled on camping chairs and blankets around a grill on a beautiful afternoon. The music added to the ambience.

The first two sparklers were both hits. I paired the Toad Hollow Amplexus ($15 at Woodman’s East) with upbeat, African-influenced music from Paul Simon’s “Graceland.” The ’09 Alma Negra Malbec Rosé ($20 at Star Liquor) complemented a cheerful movement from a Mozart violin sonata.

The Amplexus had a round, creamy texture with a dry finish, but it was outshone by the beautiful, peach-colored Alma Negra rosé, which smelled like summer flowers and tasted like candied citrus and strawberries.

Other music-wine pairings were more literal. One taster picked the herbal, lemony ’08 Green Truck Sauvignon Blanc ($10 at Woodman’s) with Cake’s “Stick Shifts and Safety Belts.”

Similarly, the state of origin for the ’10 Pine Ridge Viognier-Chenin Blanc blend ($12 at Barriques) was the inspiration for that music pairing: “California Stars” by Billy Bragg and Wilco. The Pine Ridge has been a perennial favorite of the group, with its bright flavors of crisp apple and underripe peach.

Possibly the biggest white wine the group has ever tried, the ’08 Talbott Logan Chardonnay from Santa Lucia Valley ($20 at Star Liquor), clocked in at 15.1 percent alcohol. That’s higher than most zinfandels.

While listening to “Hot Volcano” by Pearl and the Beard, tasters decided the wine recalled “buttered corn on the cob” and bananas Foster, with a rich, round texture.

We found the honeysuckle and candy apple-like ’09 Seven Hills Riesling ($11 at Steve’s Wine Market) compulsively drinkable, especially with a few poppy songs by Taylor Swift. One taster noted ripe pineapple — a nice analogy for a songstress who’s known for her sweetness as well as her spiky send-offs to ex-boyfriends.

The '09 Goats Do Roam red blend ($10 at Steve's Liquor) was a steal, with dense flavors of stewed fruit and a hint of banana. The pairing with poet-musician Saul Williams' “Wine” was refreshing, a nearly 11-minute track that ranged from soul to hip-hop

Cheap Red Wine: 2009 Goats Do Roam Red

This wine was a nice surprise and a great value. Animal labels are sometimes a clue the marketing department is in charge of the winemaking, but that's the great thing about blind tasting: you focus on the liquid not the label. In a blind tasting with a different style of Rhône blend (that cost twice as much), this was the clear winner. The wine has dry fruit up front, good balance, and a nice dry finish. It's not very complex but it's well made. There's a complete taste that's smooth and good throughout, with no defects.
