Outdoor Art Fair attracts artists nationwide

A serene setting, not-too-loud live entertainment, helpful hosts and art savvy visitors make the Royal Oak Outdoor Art Fair popular with artists who live in our local communities and who travel from as far away as California and Florida.

This year's 41st annual fair, July 9-10, returns to the tree-dotted Memorial Park with an offering of fine art and fine crafts that includes ceramics, painting/prints, fiber arts, jewelry, photography, sculpture, wood, glass, leather and mixed media.

“We are very excited, because we have 108 artists this year, which is slightly over our maximum. I think it's due to the success we had last year,” said Lorna Wildon, president of the Royal Oak Arts Council, co-sponsor of the juried art fair with the Royal Oak Department of Recreation. “So many artists last year were just amazed at how well they did. Some of them were afraid they might sell out before the fair was over.

“Word spreads, so we had a lot of applications this year.”

The owner of Art Unlimited, a paint-your-own-pottery, glass fusing, mosaic and clay studio in Okemos, Anne O'Connor, was “dumbfounded” at how many of her fused glass panels and scenes of nature were sold on the first day of last year's art fair. She was really pleased because that was her first art fair experience.

“I have to say, the Royal Oak fair really got me energized and excited,” said the self-taught artist. “Just looking at the other art fairs I've done, this one is smaller, not super crazy crowded, and people came to buy…It's in the park, so it's nice and pretty. I'm hoping it's as successful as last year, because I really enjoyed it.”

Originally from Sault Ste Marie, O'Connor has worked in clay and watercolor, but always had a fascination with glass. Her fused glass pieces feature scenes of colorful flowers, as well as stands of birch trees.

“It's the view from our cabin (up north). I think birch trees are beautiful,” she said. “When I'm doing the glass fusing, I'm using the skills of a watercolorist. I like to say I paint those nature scenes with glass.”

Metal artists Jim and Sue Swanson of Council Bluffs, Iowa return to this year's art fair with their elegant, handmade pewter leaf designs that are doubled matted and framed or mounted on stained and varnished wood, all of which they make themselves. The artists use lead-free, non-darkening pewter to cast different sizes and types of leaves — burr oak, ginkgo, sugar maple and more.
