'Space Craft Center' touches down
That's the name for a day of immersion in classes in various fiber arts or digital scrapbooking, headed up by San Mateo resident Mary McInnes.
"The goal is to bring the community together and share different talents," said McInnes.
She added that her hope is also to "see if the model works, and then put it in a permanent studio spot" where, ideally, students can repeat the process of the Space Craft Center by reserving space and coming in to work on projects.
The event, the second held in Half Moon Bay following the first one on June 12, is the brainchild of McInnes. It began when she was lamenting the lack of space in her own home to set up her loom for weaving, along with a lack of resources to pursue her interest in knitting or felting.
Then her friend, Half Moon Bay resident Edie Phillips, told her about the train depot.
The Space Craft Center will actually begin the evening before, with an open house scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 25.
This will also take place at the train depot, located at 110 Higgins Canyon Road in Half Moon Bay. The open house is free and will include craft demonstrations, and a raffle of a circa-1950 sewing machine.
The Space Craft Center, will transform the depot into a train of creative activity, said McInnes.
Participants can sign up for reserved space and spend the day with creative kindred souls, McInnes said, working on such projects as doing a few more pages in the scrapbook, knitting or trying out a sewing project on a vintage machine.
She said participants can take a class and stay the day working on project.
She has arranged for teachers for classes in knitting, felting and digital scrapbooking. Among them is San Gregorio resident Annie Rowden, who spins her own yarn from the wool of sheep she cares for on her property.
McInnes herself will teach a class in weaving.
Snacks and beverages will be provided. Participants should bring a bag lunch or go to a local restaurant.
Raffle tickets can be purchased at the open house or on Sunday. The raffle will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, and people do not need to be present to win.
Space can be reserved for the day for a fee of $40. Pricing varies for classes. Participants can pay at the door or online at www.spacecraftcenter.com .
