Woman's Body Found In St. Marys River
KINGSLAND, Ga. -- Seven hours after a Kingsland man called 911 to report his wife missing, searchers found her body on the Florida side of the St. Marys River. At 1:08 p.m. Tuesday, Karen Whicker, 57, was reported missing from her home on Edwards Drive. Her 2005 Buick LaCrosse was also missing. The Kingsland Police Department notified surrounding law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for Whicker. About 3:30 p.m., a passing motorist reported seeing a car matching the description parked at the entrance to the boat ramp off U.S. Highway 17 on the Georgia side of the St. Johns River. The motorist advised 911 that the keys were in the vehicle's ignition and that there was no one around. Responding officers found the keys still in the car. Kingsland officers, along with deputies of the Camden County and Nassau County sheriff's office, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Camden County's volunteer search and rescue team began to search the area. A DNR helicopter from St. Simmons Island also conducted an aerial search of the riverbank and surrounding areas. Camden County's K-9 units tracked Whicker from her vehicle over the bridge into Florida, then through a wooded area to the water line between the bridge and the railroad trestle. About 8:10 p.m., Whicker's body was recovered by boat from the southwest side of the bridge near White Oak Plantation property and taken ashore.
