Inmate hangs self in provincial jail's solitary confinement cell

SPENDING time in solitary confinement proved to be too much for an inmate at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) in Bara-ngay Kalunasan, Cebu City.

Ricky Salidaga, 30, was found dead, hanging from the ceiling of the solitary confinement cell, at 5 a.m. last Monday. He used a blanket to kill himself.

Capitol consultant on security matters Cesar Veloso said they will investigate the incident to determine if foul play was involved in the inmate’s death.

Prisoner Bobby Magda-daro, who serves as head of a group of inmates, admonished Salidaga for making fun of some visitors.

Comendador said Mag-dadaro had asked him to place Salidaga in solitary confinement but the warden declined when the latter asked for forgiveness.

In the afternoon, however, Comendador received a report that Salidaga “went wild” in front of visitors. The warden then decided to place the inmate in solitary confinement for “safe-keeping.”

Autopsy

Veloso said the autopsy report of the Regional Crime Laboratory identified the cause of death as asphyxia.

“We are doing an investigation (to remove) doubts. Pero imposible man ang mishandling (Mishandling was not possible),” he said.

He noted that a security camera video showed Salidaga being placed inside the solitary confinement cell.

Salidaga was brought to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, but he was dead upon arriving at the facility.

Joe Martin Fuentes, medico legal officer, said he did not find any other injuries that would indicate that Salidaga was mauled.

He said he found red contusions on Salidaga’s neck, and his trachea and lungs were swelling.

“But I didn’t find any defensive wounds in his body,” he said.

Fuentes said the inmate had been dead for three to 24 hours before his body was brought to the laboratory for autopsy.

The inmate’s grandmother said their family would like the authorities to pursue the investigation.

The Jewish calendar more closely resembles a spiral then the closed circle of the Gregorian calendar. In the Gregorian calendar, for example, Christmas falls on December 25th every year. In the Hebrew calendar, as the seasons turn in the cycle every year, the calendar returns as well, but not to the same exact place year to year. Each week’s Sabbath begins on Friday, at sunset, but each week, Friday’s sunset falls at a slightly different time of day. Similarly, following the lunar pattern, each new year commences in a different place—a slightly different time of season—from the year before. The timing of worship follows the larger cycles of nature. Now, why in the world would we put labyrinths in churches? Some believe in represented the pilgrimage to Jerusalem but I think it goes much deeper than this and was integrated into religious realms for reasons of worship but not to the GOD we worship.
