Rotary cut veneers are sliced on a lathe where logs are constantly spinning. A plain sliced veneer is one where half of a log is shaved in parallel layers to create a number of variations in grains. A quarter-cut veneer has rings that are sliced at right angles creating a striped grain and a rift cut is where the slicing is done at a 15 degree angle for a fletching effect.

These can be used on flat surfaces and both sides of the veneer can be utilized. Once the finish is applied to it however, the wood undergoes a transformation, completely changing its make-up. Backed veneers are the most expensive forms as they are reinforced with other materials for strength and flexibility.
