JANICE ANN'S JOURNAL: Sometimes we all just need a helpful reminder

I appreciate it so much when someone tells me who they are when I have a blank look on my face.

Gerald Neal asked me if I was Willie Royle’s daughter. I said yes that I was. He worked for Daddy at the W.C. Royle Typewriter Company when he was a junior in high school in 1961. He mentioned Thedford Easley, Billy Weaver, Jerry Burris and Carolyn Hughes Peacock that had worked for Daddy. Gerald said that he got 90 cents an hour when he started.

The group of LHS grads from 1962 and 1963 meet the second Tuesday at Golden Corral to eat. They enjoy getting together. Kathey Brown Neal graduated in 1962 and Gerald graduated in 1963. Margaret Thomas recognized me and said that she and Mevia Leavings had been at the Keltys Post Office for many years. Cassandra Harris is there now.

Claire Tyson, daughter of Michele and Mike Tyson, was a duchess for the Nacogdoches Heritage Festival. She was escorted by Clark Groom.

There were 16 princesses from Nacogdoches and 12 duchesses from surrounding towns.

It was a five-day event with brunches, rehearsals, luncheons, dinner, the ball and coronation of the queen. Claire had a beautiful red dress with the long, white gloves, and Clark was handsome in his tux.

Michele and Mike Tyson will be moving July 7 to League City, and his church is in Texas City.

Gracie, their 13-year-old, will be in the eighth grade. Claire will be attending the University of Texas at Austin, and son Graham is a senior at the U.S. Naval Academy. This summer he is a skipper of a 44-foot sailboat. His team won first place in their race from Annapolis to Newport, R.I. He will participate in the regattas for the summer. 

Anita Jackson celebrated her birthday on June 17 with daughter Brenda Walker.

Miss Alicia Crews was honored on her retirement from Diboll ISD after 27 years at a luncheon at Milagros Tea House & Gifts.

Those retired teachers attending were: Teresa Farrow, Sandy Hendrick, Alice Deaton, Dianne Tate and Martha Carswell.

I sat by Gladys Wilkinson Liese at Nathalie Massingill Sheeler’s funeral. She told me that Gladys, Nathalie and Linnette Jones Scagliola were the oldest members of the First United Methodist Church. Gladys joined in 1931. She has been a member in Lufkin the entire time.

The reception after the service was in the Allen Parlor. Suzanne Russell, bereavement chairman, was busy keeping the Explorers Class busy. I visited with Cindy Kadlec, who was helping serve. This class had adopted the Sheelers.
