In Concert: 311 gets own festival in Florida, plus Hukilau, more
A new twist on the music festival is beginning to take root – the festival geared toward fans of one band.
Wanee, up in Live Oak, is among the most successful of these, becoming a magnet for fans of The Allman Brothers Band. Dave Matthews Band took a similar approach this summer with their series of “Caravan” shows – four festival-sized shows highlighted each night by a full set by DMB.
The more raucous group 311 is now getting into the act with the initial 311 Pow Wow Festival, coming Aug. 4-6 at the Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park in Live Oak.
As the headlining act, 311 will play two sets each on both Friday and Saturday that weekend. They’ll be joined by Sublime with Rome, Deftones, G. Love, Soja, The Dirty Heads, Reel Big Fish, Ozomatli, Streetlight Manifesto, The Supervillains, Ballyhoo, DJ Soulman and DJ Trichrome.
Among the group’s four sets, 311 announced that it would play its 1997 album Transistor • Full-on Tiki party: The Hukilau, the annual salute to all things Polynesian Pop, will be getting under way on Thursday and won’t stop until Sunday night. Among the usual flowered shirts, retro design and tropical drinks are some good bands.
Among the shows you can check out down in Fort Lauderdale are sets from The Intoxicators!, Grinder Nova, The Exotics, The Fisherman and, of course, the Master of Ceremonies, King Kukulele.
For the full list of events, which will be taking place both at the Bahia Mar on the beach and the Mai-Kai restaurant downtown, check out the Hukilau’s website , or visit the blog The Atomic Grog , which has a very intensive look at this weekend-long event.
• Busy days down at the Fillmore: The Fillmore Miami Beach began to fill out its dance card for late summer this week, scheduling Danish metal band Volbeat (Aug. 5), smooth R&B stylist Brian McKnight (Aug. 19), stylish rock icon Brian Ferry (Sept. 29) and Irish pop-sters The Script (Oct. 7). Tickets for all four shows go on sale Friday.
• Also on sale this week: Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Hard Rock Live, July 12 (Friday); Beres Hammond, St. Lucie Civic Center, July 26 (Monday); Blink-182/My Chemical Romance, Cruzan Amphitheatre, Sept. 23 (Saturday); Marc Broussard, Culture Room, Oct. 5 (Friday); Enrique Iglesias/Pitbull/Prince Royce, American Airlines Arena, Oct. 22 (Friday).
• Happy 15th, Jazid!

GraphOilogy: Hurricane Dean Update (2007/08/18 - 120:00 UTC)
Things are looking much brighter for Louisiana, as the GFDL model has come in line with all of the other models in predicting a landfall in Southern Texas or Northern Mexico. It now appears likely that Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula will knock Dean down a category or two before it can approach the Texas coast. The upper level low that was forecast by the GFDL to potentially steer Dean northwards appears to be weakening and moving westwards, out of the way of Dean. You can watch this upper level low on water vapor satellite loops. It is the counter-clockwise spinning region that has moved west off the Florida coast into the eastern Gulf of Mexico. If this low continues to weaken and move westwards, it will not be able to swing Dean northwestwards towards northeast Texas and Louisiana.
