Stimets (10 under) wins second title
WEST BOYLSTON — Ricky Stimets won the Worcester County Amateur for the second time in three years yesterday and he was much more impressed with this victory.It's easy to see why.
Stimets followed his opening-round 65 Saturday at Kettle Brook Golf Club with a 69 yesterday at Wachusett Country Club to finish at 10-under 134 and defeat runner-up Ryan Riley of Norton CC by seven shots. The 20-year-old Paxton resident also bettered his winning score of two years ago by a whopping 10 strokes. Stimets shot 70-74 in the wind to win by three shots in 2009.
“This is the most special one,” Stimets said, “because I've never shot 10 under par in a two-day tournament and it feels good to win it twice.”
Stimets had a similar feeling after he won the Division 1 state high school individual golf championship for the second time in three years as a senior at Wachusett Regional in 2008. Stimets doesn't want to wait another two years to claim his third Worcester County Amateur title.
“I plan on doing it next year,” Stimets said.
On Saturday, Stimets shot a 65 to tie the tournament course record set by Matt Parziale en route to his 2008 Worcester County Amateur victory. Stimets fell one shot short of the overall course record that Rick Dunn, 58, of Holden shot last year. Dunn watched Stimets play Saturday and rooted for him to break his record.
“He hit it good enough to do it,” Dunn said. “He's an incredible player.”
Stimets took a four-shot lead into yesterday's second round so he played conservatively by hitting irons and hybrids off some tees and aiming for the middle of the green. The rising junior at North Alabama still made twice as many birdies (six) as bogeys.
“Just play it safe,” he said, “shoot for pars and if something drops, it drops. I wasn't really going after anything.”
After driving into the trees on the left and making bogey on 14, Stimets sealed his victory with birdies on 15, 16 and 17 with his friend Eric Guglielmello carrying his bag and his mother, Stacey Zawacki, and grandmother, Jackie Stratton, following him.
After driving to the right of the cart path on the hill on the par-4 16th, Stimets made a difficult, 55-yard chip under a branch to within eight feet as a light rain began to fall. On 17, he sank a 10-footer.
