Sale of seized items brings in $45000 for sheriff, prosecutor
ZANESVILLE -- A surplus sale at the Muskingum County Sheriff's Office evidence center on Newark Road Saturday brought in nearly $45,000 to the county's coffers.
Sheriff Matt Lutz said about three-fourths of the 600 items up for auction came from drug seizures and forfeiture proceedings in the past year.
"We had 252 buyers show up and about 600 items sold," Lutz said. "As part of the process we go through, from time to time we have these sales when we need to clear out the evidence center to make room."
Among the items up for sale were cars, motorcycles, boats, tools, hunting knives and bows, weight training equipment, coins and jewelry.
The biggest ticket items sold were a 1967 Firebird convertible, which fetched $19,000; a 1967 Chevrolet Impala, which brought $7,000; and a four-wheeler sold for $2,800, Lutz said.
The funds collected will be split between the sheriff's office and prosecutor's office, he said.
"We'll put the money in a fund that we can use for anything related to drug investigations such as equipment, vehicles and communications," Lutz added.
George Buchanan Real Estate and Auction Service Inc. conducted the sale.
