Governor goes on vacation
After a busy holiday weekend, Gov. Peter Shumlin is on vacation in Nova Scotia until July 10.
The governor's office says Shumlin, D-Vermont, will attend a meeting of the New England governors and Eastern premiers next week. That conference is in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and the governor's office says he is on break until then.
The governor owns property in Nova Scotia.
So while Shumlin is out of state, Lt. Gov. Phil Scott, R-Vermont, is acting governor. That means when Scott races his car at Thunder Road in Barre on Thursday he'll be racing as acting governor.

TNJN - Youth acting camp offers summer theater experience
A few Knoxville kids passed up on average summer camps this year. They chose a youth acting camp at Farragut High School instead.
Lea McMahan, a Farragut theater teacher and UT theater alumna, directs the camp. She attended basketball camps when she was younger and has thought for several years about doing a similar camp for theater.
"This seemed like a good year," she said. "I had the staff for it."
All the instruction and directing is done by Farragut theater students. They applied to work at the camp, but they are donating their time. McMahan mainly supervises.
"That has been probably one of the best things, because I've gotten to see what my high schoolers can do. That's been fun for me," she said.
The high schoolers agree.
"It shows me how much I've learned about theater," Anissa Goetz, a senior, said.
Moriah Genova, a sophomore, feels teaching at the camp has helped improve her theater skills.
"We're learning how to be better too," she said.
The students work with partners to teach the camp's morning sessions. Campers rotate through workshops on improvisation, musical theater, storytelling, characterization and stage movement.
In the afternoon, the students work individually with campers on scenes and monologues for the final performance Friday afternoon. Then the entire group comes together to prepare songs.
The campers seem to enjoy improvisation the most.
"It's a lot of fun and games, but you're also learning at the same time," Alyssa Reno-Demick, a fifth-grader at Farragut Intermediate School, said.
Farragut Middle School sixth-grader Noah Feehan agrees. "You really don't think it's learning, but you're learning more."
The camp is a fundraiser for Farragut's theater department, but they're also building for the future.
"It's a good way to make the theater program better," said junior Ariel Reno-Demick. She hopes that today's campers may be future high school stars.
Feehan, who has acted before, said he's enjoyed the camp.
"I recommend other kids to do it if they like acting," he said.
McMahan hasn't decided yet if she'll hold another camp next year. After three days, she and her instructors were exhausted.
"I don't think they realized how much energy it was going to take," she said.
Goetz has been impressed by the kids' behavior and dedication; however, she said, "I start my day with a triple-shot espresso to keep up with them.
