Csathy's household has also expanded. Nine years and two companies ago, Csathy and his wife, Luisa, moved from Los Angeles to North County with their toddler daughter, Hunter, now 11. Since then, the Rancho Santa Fe residents have added a son, Luca, 8, to the household.

Csathy said his family and employees appreciate the ease of living in North County, which offers a more human scale of life than the sometimes dystopian Los Angeles megalopolis.

That ease is in plain view at Sorenson's office on Palomar Airport Road, west of Interstate 5. The office, with surfboards stacked in its reception area, is a few blocks from the beach. But while enjoying oneself on the job is a perk of the San Diego County work culture, Csathy said, the appearance is deceptive.

"San Diego has a relaxed-seeming vibe, but there's a lot of intensity under the covers," he said. "Believe me, we work very, very hard. We've just as much intensity, or more so, than L.A. or the Silicon Valley or the East Coast, but we do it our way."

Sorenson specializes in codecs, the software used to encode, decode, compress and decompress video and audio data. As more devices become video-enabled, from cell phones to iPads, the challenge of how to transmit video in the best format for each kind of device increases. Sorenson provides tools to make this happen, on the fly, automatically.

Sorenson's corporate customers includes Disney, Apple, Blockbuster and Microsoft.

Carlsbad's a good location for recruiting skilled employees, Csathy said.

"From a talent perspective, I think we have an advantage in being here, where there are fewer digital media and technology companies, than there are in Los Angeles," Csathy said. "Here, we can choose the best from the best."

"It's a relatively small community, but a pretty high-powered community," Csathy said of the region. "There's a lot of interesting names in technology who are here, and I think it's overlooked frequently from Silicon Valley.
