Workshops for beginner and intermediate uke players will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23. Tickets are $25 for the public, $22.50 for Strathmore Stars. Consider the ukulele.

It seemed the perfect instrument for the Strathmore Free Outdoor Summer Concert Series, which celebrates community each year.

The third annual UkeFest will take place on Wednesday.

Playing uke is "infectious," said Cathy Fink, a longtime uke-player who will emcee UkeFest with her musical partner Marcy Marxer. "It brings so much joy to people."

Two-time Grammy-winners Fink and Marxer have performed as a folk duo for decades and were instrumental in organizing the Strathmore event.

"The uke is experiencing a huge renaissance right now," she said. "The energy, the experience, and I might say the happiness about the uke" made it the perfect focus for a free community event.

This year will be a little different, though, as folks gathered will attempt to beat the Guinness Book of World Records for Largest Ukulele Ensemble.

According to a press release, the current record was set on June 20, 2009, in London when 851 uke players performed in unison at the London Uke Festival.

The Strathmore programming department estimated about 1,500 people have attended each of the past UkeFest concerts, about 2,000 at its peak, said Mike Fila, manager of media relations at Strathmore.

This year, they'll strive to get ukuleles in the hands of more people.

Ukuleles will be available for purchase on site, beginning at $30, from House of Musical Traditions, a business based in Takoma Park.

"They'll be well-stocked," Fink said. "A lot of people come and buy their first uke, or they buy a second uke that's nicer than their first."

Players should register by 7 p.m. Wednesday at Strathmore, and a notary will verify the final count.

Beginning at 7:30 p.m., guests with ukes will be led in two songs, "This Land Is Your Land" and the Hawaiian tune "Aloha 'Oe."
