Area jobless rate worsens in May
Improving unemployment rates statewide could be bad news for the unemployed in Wayne, Fayette and Union counties, where unemployment grew last month. If the state's unemployment rate drops below 8 percent, another seven weeks out of a possible 20 weeks of federal extended benefits will expire. The remaining federal benefits -- a total of 40 weeks -- are not tied to the unemployment rate, according to DWD.Butler Wayne County Financial - News

Virtual help for teachers | TimesDaily.com | The Times Daily ...
As of Aug. 1, the Virtual Village Classroom, a monthly online publication focusing on writing in the classroom for grades kindergarten through eighth, will be available to subscribers.
Creator Darren Butler, a writing specialist from Muscle Shoals, has put his teaching skills into the magazine that includes instructional video lessons. Teachers can chose whether to use the video in the classroom or adapt the information to their own teaching style.
“This has been in development for two to three years,” said Butler, who provides professional development for schools. “I’d thought of doing it in book form but because everything changes so rapidly, we decided to go the online route.”
The 80-page magazine incorporates various disciplines to provide not only writing instruction but art and various subject areas. The program is designed to present a writing lesson each week as well as in a different class subject.
Enrichment opportunities are included in the magazine as well, such as character education, lessons in history and topical subjects such as the life of Helen Keller, one of the first lessons to be offered in August.
Butler said he covers much of the same type of information he would deliver when speaking to teacher groups in a professional development-type seminar.
Butler said his idea for the magazine grew out of concern for students who “get to junior high school and quite simply, don’t know how to write.”
Because of the state’s financial woes, the writing assessment typically given to grades fifth, seventh and 10th has been postponed with hopes of adding it back to the testing schedule in 2013.
Butler said without the writing test, teachers don’t teach writing with the same vigor because there isn’t the same state
accountability.
“Students shouldn’t graduate from high school in this state and not be able to write competently,” Butler said. “I believe that competence begins building in kindergarten. This isn’t a curriculum, it’s strictly a resource. It’s a supplement that engages teachers and children.”
Jeffrey Bibbee, an assistant professor of history at the University of North Alabama, collaborated with Butler on the project.
“This kind of teaching medium offers opportunities for the teachers, especially new and young teachers, to get engaged in educational conversation,” Bibbee said. “The young teachers coming out of college are very Internet savvy and Internet-based learning is very appealing to them.
