Gale force hits the runway

Television projects had come knocking before, but Gale had held out for something like this, knowing it was something she could comment on with authority.

The fact that Gale could also be involved with an executive producer role was the icing on the cake.

Juggling the role of host and judge for series three of the reality show, in which 12 Australian fashion designers battle it out in a series of weekly challenges to put something wearable on the runway - and survive elimination - each week, saw Gale move to Melbourne for six weeks.

By the halfway mark, she admitted she was feeling the pace of the long days, but that was nothing compared with the pressure on the contestants: NSW designers Anthony Allars, Dylan Cooper, Johnny Schembri, Nerida Bourne and Rachael Perks, Victorian entrants Claire Hocking, Craig Braybrook, Gabrielle Stephens and Matcho Suba and WA hopefuls Anna McEachran, Amanda McKenna and Timothy Godbold.

"It's been challenging, but very satisfying," Gale says before a runway judging session midway through filming the show.

"The contestants are a hugely talented and very hungry bunch. They all have such a different style and fashion aesthetic.

"They're diverse in terms of both their characters and what they put out on the catwalk each week."

Dressed in a fluffy white dressing gown, yet to step into another sensational outfit for judging day, Gale isn't quite runway-ready, but as usual, looks flawless.

While the American version of the reality show has made stern-faced judging its signature, Gale says she and fellow judges Kirrily Johnston and Jarrad Clark have opted for a slightly softer, albeit still honest, approach.

"We are honest, but have no interest in being mean," she says. "The hardest thing for me has been these elimination days. We three judges make the decision collectively, but I'm the one who ultimately delivers the verdict. "That's hard, because we appreciate the work they're putting in and, at the end of the day, it's their life goal and dream and I feel like I'm shattering it every time I have to tell someone to go."

Fashion designer and Gale's great mate, Alex Perry, has taken up the mentoring role for the contestants this season.

Drawing on a late-’70s, early ’80s, post-punk style (think plaid blazers and velvet suits), he’s conceived a line of boys’ clothing worth lusting after.

With patch pockets and faux suede trim, little-guy styling never looked this cool. At first glance, a yarn-dyed twill coat and cozy pocket cargo shorts seem made for the runway, but they are built tough enough for everyday play. For more formal affairs, try the shawl collar-jacket and skinny trousers a la Joey Ramone.

Now he’s ready to rock.
