Cowboys gather at Echoes of the Trails event in Fort Scott

Who doesn’t like cowboys, especially the kind who sing and tell stories of the old west?

There were plenty of them on hand Saturday for the main day of the 15th annual Echoes of the Trail Cowboy Gathering.

“I’ve been coming here for 14 years,” said Joe Lester, who comes from Kansas, Okla. “I missed the first one because I had something else in Wichita.”

He sang, recited some poems mostly written by other people and told stories, most of them not exactly true. But Lester says he’s an honest-to-goodness cowboy.

“I’ve been from Canada to Oklahoma, and worked in two or three outfits in Canada,” Lester said. “Now my wife and I have a saddle shop and I make custom saddles.”

He keeps coming back to Fort Scott every year, he said, because he likes the atmosphere and knows just about everybody, including Johnny Kendrick, co-founder of Echoes of the Trail with historian Arnold Schofield.

“I could listen to Johnny Kendrick sing for three hours, if I could get him to sing for three hours,” Lester said.

Barry Ward was in Fort Scott four or five years ago, and decided to come back this year.

For many years he farmed in Copeland, west of Dodge City.

“When I was growing up it had a population of 290, and it still does,” he said.

A few years ago, after their three children were grown, he sold the farm and moved with his wife to Elbert, Colo.

“Now I perform full-time, and I’m loving it,” Ward said. “You meet a lot of great people.”

He writes his own songs, many about farm life in Kansas and also about being a cowboy.

“It’s not how well you rope or ride, it’s what’s inside,” Ward sings in one of his songs.

All that singing, or listening or shopping vendor booths, can make a person hungry, and that’s where Dennis and Donna Williams, Neosho, Mo., come in with their grub, served from an authentic chuckwagon.

“I’ve been here just about every year,” Williams said. “I used to camp right here at the wagon, and there used to be other chuckwagons here. I’ve been the only wagon here the past three years.”

A retired wagon, buggy and carriage maker, he said he’s been doing the chuck wagon for 17 or 18 years, getting his recipes from old cowboy books.

“Some of those recipes use a lot of hot peppers or seasonings not to my taste, so I kind of smooth them out,” Williams said.
